Brief Introduction: A one-year Emergency Medicine Fellowship started at Mercy Medical Center Redding by California Emergency Physicians and Dignity Health on March 9th, 2016. Fellows will be spending their time with 15 ED shifts per month in our Level 2 Trauma Center and monthly blocks of longitudinal experience on Trauma/Acute Care Surgery, Critical Care, Anesthesia, and Orthopedics. Medical Staff has been instrumental in their support for the program and the Library/CME Committee approved the weekly EM Fellowship and Multidisciplinary Conference as a regularly scheduled series for two-hour CME credit weekly. It will occur every Tuesday except for the 2nd Tuesday of the month. The goal of the conference is to cover a condensed breadth of Emergency Medicine topics to further the training of the EM Fellows, and provide a forum where multidisciplinary expertise, teaching, discussion, and collaboration can add to this and enhance learning opportunities for others whom attend: supervising physicians, ED and hospital-based PA/NP’s, occasional FP residents on the EM rotation, and interested others.
Hour 1, 7-7:50a: Fellows and the ED Supervising physicians will give case presentations with teaching points (15-20 min). Brief case presentation will include discussion of differential diagnosis, evaluation/work-up, and resuscitation/treatments. Evidence-based medicine, diagnostic treatment strategies and treatment guidelines will be emphasized.
Hour 2, 8-8:50: Review and discussion of topics in the weekly readings from various content sources including Tintinalli’s, journal articles, FOAM (Free Open Access Emergency Meducation) site teaching links, hands on simulations (ultrasound, procedures, trauma man, etc). We encourage our colleagues already involved as teaching faculty to visit and participate.
